Owner's Power Management Notes

Power Management Notes:

We have lived full-time on the boat for two years and have never had a generator. The water maker on the boat is a 12V system producing an average of 15 gallons per hour depending on water clarity/temperature. We run it for three or four hours every other day. We occasionally run the air conditioner off the inverter for about eight hours overnight to cool our cabin when it is excessively hot. That rarely happens as there is almost always a breeze. That said, we run it nonstop in marinas because there is both shore power and, generally, no wind at all, and just because we can! (And we like to dry out the boat occasionally.)

We have 1200-amp hours of lithium charged through 2100 W of solar. Four or five hours of sun is more than enough to keep the boat charged and run all systems. If we have more sun, we will run the washing machine or water maker until it is full.

The alternator is a 250-amp Balmar that produces a steady 100 to 150 A of power at idle. Moving the boat every couple of days throws a big burst of power back into the batteries whenever it’s used.
